Norris claims pole in rain-soaked Brazilian GP qualifying as Russell penalty shuffles grid
Lando Norris topped a rain-delayed qualifying session at Interlagos on Saturday, posting a 1m27.470s lap on intermediates to beat George Russell by two tenths. Grid penalties for Russell, Leclerc, Hamilton, and Verstappen significantly reshuffle Sunday's starting order.
Lando Norris will start Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix from pole position after mastering treacherous wet conditions at Interlagos on Saturday, edging Mercedes’ George Russell by two tenths of a second with a 1m27.470s lap on intermediate tyres.
The qualifying session was red-flagged for over an hour after heavy rain left standing water on the circuit, with drivers initially abandoning their intermediate-shod cars in Q1 to switch to full wets before race control halted proceedings entirely. When the session finally resumed, Norris was the class of the field in Q3, with Mercedes’ Andrea Kimi Antonelli qualifying third — six tenths adrift — and Charles Leclerc fourth for Ferrari.
Grid penalties, however, will significantly alter Sunday’s starting order. Russell carries a five-place penalty for a power unit change, a situation made more frustrating by his Mercedes team instructing him to abort his second flying lap in Q3 — a decision that visibly angered the British driver. Leclerc’s 10-place engine penalty drops him further still, elevating Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson to third on the grid.
Lawson’s promotion comes at a particularly charged moment. The New Zealander is fighting to keep his Racing Bulls seat amid reports the team is considering promoting reserve driver Nikola Tsolov, and his standout qualifying performance — fifth in the session, third on the grid — will give the squad cause to reconsider.
Nico Hülkenberg impressed in sixth for Audi, ahead of Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar and Haas rookie Oliver Bearman. Fernando Alonso and Alex Albon rounded out the top ten on Saturday.
The session’s casualties were notable. Lewis Hamilton was eliminated in Q2 — though he is already set to start from the back due to a power unit penalty — alongside McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who could only manage 12th. Haas rookie Rafael Camara had progressed to Q2 despite an earlier off, but crashed heavily into the wall at Turn 12 late in the session to bring out a red flag. Arvid Lindblad was eliminated 14th after a power unit issue in his Racing Bulls car, and Carlos Sainz exited in 15th for Williams.
Max Verstappen, who also carries an engine penalty and will join Hamilton at the rear of the grid, did not participate in Q2 and was classified 16th.
