Lando Norris has admitted he received a stern dressing-down from McLaren management after colliding with team-mate Oscar Piastri at the Singapore Grand Prix, but the British driver confirmed both men remain free to race each other wheel-to-wheel at the Circuit of the Americas.

Speaking during Thursday’s media day in Austin ahead of the US Grand Prix, Norris was pressed on the internal fallout from the Singapore incident. Asked whether he had escaped McLaren CEO Zak Brown’s office unscathed, Norris was candid: “Oh no, I got plenty of telling-offs and plenty of words have been said.”

Despite the clear frustration from the top of the organisation, McLaren opted against imposing blanket team orders. Norris confirmed the rules of engagement going forward draw a firm line between hard racing and costly contact. “We’re still allowed to race,” he said, “but obviously we can’t have a coming together, and we have to avoid that in any opportunity possible.”

The Singapore collision threw a spotlight on the tensions that can emerge when two championship-calibre drivers share the same garage. McLaren’s decision to let them continue racing reflects the team’s confidence that both Norris and Piastri can manage the boundary — but also the commercial and sporting reality that neutralising either driver risks undermining their Constructors’ Championship campaign.

Norris, who arrived in Austin eager to move on from the controversy, made clear his focus has already shifted. “We’re in Austin now, so I’m looking forward to this weekend, putting the past behind me,” he said. “It’s a track I love.”

With three full practice sessions on the schedule for the traditional race-weekend format at COTA, Norris will have ample opportunity to dial in his set-up and rebuild momentum after a bruising fortnight in the paddock.
