New Zealand Rugby has no contract offer in front of Hurricanes winger Fehi Fineanganofo, leaving the 23-year-old’s future in limbo, according to a report by rugby journalist Paul Cully for The Post. NZR has indicated it will only engage in negotiations with Newcastle Red Bulls once Fineanganofo’s representatives formally request a release from his current Hurricanes deal.

The update contradicts a claim made last week by podcaster Andy Rowe on Sports Nation, who told listeners that Fineanganofo’s move to Newcastle had been actively “blocked” by NZR. Rowe, co-host of The Good, The Bad, The Rugby alongside Jeremy Paul and Justin Marshall, said his sources in Newcastle were “very, very upset that the deal is off.” Cully’s reporting suggests the reality is more procedural than confrontational — NZR simply has not been formally approached.

NZR CEO Stuart Lancaster had previously denied any direct interference in the situation, and World Rugby regulations prohibit unions from blocking player movement in such a manner. According to Cully’s account, NZR is described as “open to negotiating” with Newcastle should the formal request arrive, though no such request has been made.

A further complication is NZR’s reluctance to set a precedent. Fineanganofo’s case is seen internally as one that could open the door to a wave of similar buyout requests, making the union cautious about how it handles the outcome.

For now, Fineanganofo remains contracted to the Hurricanes, and there is nothing preventing All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie from selecting him for New Zealand this season while that deal is still active. Whether Rennie’s selectors factor that into their planning ahead of the July series remains to be seen.

The situation is effectively at a standstill until Fineanganofo’s camp makes a formal move — and until that happens, NZR has made clear it will not be the one to blink first.
