Nine players ruled out as injury-hit United host Roma in Champions League
Manchester United welcome Roma to Old Trafford on Tuesday without Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Benjamin Sesko and Manuel Ugarte, while the visitors are also missing four key players including Lorenzo Pellegrini and Paulo Dybala.
Manchester United face Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday night in the Champions League league phase with nine players set to miss the match across both squads, as Michael Carrick’s side look to end a nine-game winless run.
United head into the fixture in desperate need of a result after a 2-0 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at the weekend left them without a win in nine matches across all competitions. Back-to-back Champions League losses to Como and Atletico Madrid have dropped the club to 20th in the league phase standings.
Carrick confirmed that Marcus Rashford will not feature after the England international picked up a thigh and hip injury. Luke Shaw also remains sidelined, missing his fifth consecutive match. “Luke definitely won’t be around this week and fit at that point. Marcus, we’ll just have to see day by day how he keeps improving,” said Carrick.
Patrick Dorgu returned to group training ahead of the match but Carrick confirmed the wing-back will not be involved. “His first day with the group, Pat, so great to have him back,” Carrick said. “He’s worked ever so hard to be back with the group, but he won’t be involved tomorrow. We’ll see how he progresses through the week really, but great to have him back.”
Benjamin Sesko and Manuel Ugarte complete United’s absentee list, both sidelined with long-term injuries.
Roma arrive at Old Trafford with their own injury problems. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini has confirmed that Lorenzo Pellegrini (hamstring), Paulo Dybala (calf) and Manu Kone (hamstring) are all unavailable. Goalkeeper Mile Svilar is also absent as he continues to recover from a toe injury.
