Di Meco confirms Deschamps' return to coaching, Juventus in his sights
Free since leaving the France national team, Didier Deschamps is reportedly preparing to take up a club coaching position, according to his former teammate Éric Di Meco. Juventus Turin, where Spalletti faces growing criticism, is said to be a serious option.
Didier Deschamps should not remain without a club for long. According to Éric Di Meco, the former France manager — who left his post after fourteen years leading the national team — is about to return to the touchline.
The former Marseille defender, who played alongside Deschamps at Marseille, was categorical about his future: “Didier will dive back in.” While a national team position remains a possible option, Di Meco believes his former teammate will prioritize a club. The reason? A specific objective Deschamps has never achieved as a coach: winning the Ligue des Champions. “He has great ambition, and his dream is to win the Ligue des Champions as a coach. So he will always favor a club that has the possibility of taking him to the supreme title,” Di Meco explained.
The most concrete lead points to Turin. In recent days, the Italian press has mentioned a potential return for Deschamps to Juventus, where Luciano Spalletti faces mounting criticism. A scenario that makes sense to Di Meco: “I could see him at Juve. It’s a club that deeply marked him in terms of tactical culture, he absorbed it.”
Deschamps indeed maintains strong ties with the Turin club. He played there as a player between 1994 and 1999, winning two Ligue des Champions titles in particular, before taking the coaching position in 2006-2007. Di Meco also highlights the symbolic dimension of such a return: “This club, if he returns there and makes it win, that’s satisfaction. Juve is one of the greatest clubs in the world.”
For now, no official announcement has been made. But according to Di Meco, the question is no longer whether Deschamps will return to coaching, but rather where and when.
