Neymar weighs full retirement within days after Brazil's World Cup exit to Norway
Neymar has confirmed he is retiring from international football after Brazil were eliminated in the last 16 by an Erling Haaland-inspired Norway at the World Cup. Reports in Brazil now suggest the 34-year-old is also considering ending his club career entirely.
Neymar is reportedly considering retiring from football altogether within days of Brazil’s World Cup elimination, after the 34-year-old confirmed he is stepping away from international duty following a last-16 defeat to Norway at MetLife Stadium.
Erling Haaland inspired Norway to knock out one of the tournament’s pre-competition favourites, ending what proved to be a deeply controversial campaign for Neymar, who had been a debated selection in Carlo Ancelotti’s 26-man squad. After the final whistle, Neymar left little ambiguity about his international future.
“I tried,” he said. “It started here at MetLife Stadium, and I finished here. It is now over.”
Reports from Brazil have since gone further, suggesting Neymar may not even see out his contract with boyhood club Santos — the side he returned to emotionally last year. He is said to be taking time to reflect on the tournament before making any final decision on his club career.
Neymar’s father has publicly urged his son to reconsider, posting a heartfelt message on social media. “A decision made today does not define your entire story,” Neymar Sr. wrote. “A dream that hasn’t come true yet doesn’t mean it’s dead.”
In an extended appeal, the elder Neymar added: “I watched the boy grow into one of the greatest players of his generation. When I look back, I see much more than trophies, goals, contracts, or recognition. I see miracles.” He closed with a direct plea: “Son, keep playing football. Rediscover the joy of having the ball at your feet. Smile again on the field.”
Neymar finishes his international career with 130 caps and 80 goals for Brazil — a record haul for the Selecão. His club career has taken him from Santos to Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Al-Hilal before his return to Santos, where he has scored 17 goals in 43 appearances. Whether that chapter also closes in the coming days remains to be seen.
