Newell returns from MCL injury to start Crusaders' Super Rugby semi-final against Chiefs
Fletcher Newell has recovered from an MCL injury sustained just two weeks ago to reclaim his tighthead prop berth for the Crusaders' Super Rugby semi-final against the Chiefs in Hamilton. Braydon Ennor also comes back into the starting backline to replace the injured Dallas McLeod.
Fletcher Newell has been named to start at tighthead prop for the Crusaders in their Super Rugby Pacific semi-final against the Chiefs in Hamilton, just two weeks after sustaining an MCL injury. Newell’s return sees fellow All Black George Bower drop to the bench, with Finlay Brewis retaining his place at loosehead.
The only other change to the starting XV is forced by injury, with Dallas McLeod ruled out with a groin complaint. His absence opens the door for Braydon Ennor, who returns to full fitness after coming off the bench last week. Coach Rob Penney described the swap as one Test-capped midfielder replacing another.
“He’s world-class and brings some different elements, but he’s equally as impressive on both sides of the ball. You lose one, bring another in, and it’s hopefully pretty seamless,” Penney said of Ennor.
The backline reshuffle also creates a bench spot for Macca Springer. Beyond those two changes, Penney names an otherwise unchanged matchday 23 for what is a rematch of the 2025 final.
Newell, speaking ahead of the trip to Hamilton, acknowledged the challenge awaiting the Crusaders but said the squad is relishing the occasion. “It will be hostile, but it’s an awesome opportunity for us to go out there and put on a good performance. They’re a quality side, and the last times we’ve played them have been really tough.”
“The stakes are higher, training’s more intense, the games are more intense — these are the games you want to play in,” he added.
The Crusaders head into the semi-final carrying a significant injury list. Scott Barrett, Will Jordan, and Tamaiti Williams are among those already ruled out for the season, while Cullen Grace, Kershawl Sykes-Martin, Seb Calder, and George Bell are all listed as short-term doubts.
