Neville slams Dorgu's 'massive mistake' as United concede late equaliser at Everton

Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday, conceding a stoppage-time strike from Ainsley Maitland-Niles that cancelled out Benjamin Sesko’s 87th-minute winner and left Michael Carrick’s side with just one point from the trip to Merseyside.

Bryan Mbeumo had given United the lead early in the second half with a sublime finish, before Tyrique George levelled for the Toffees eight minutes from time. Sesko appeared to have snatched the win in the 87th minute, only for Maitland-Niles to curl a long-range effort past Senne Lammens deep into added time.

Gary Neville has been particularly critical of Patrick Dorgu, the Danish full-back who came on for Marcus Rashford in the 70th minute. On his podcast, Neville broke down the build-up to the equaliser and identified Dorgu’s pressing as a primary reason United were exposed, describing the error as a “massive mistake” from the substitute.

Rashford, who had started his second consecutive league fixture before making way for Dorgu, took to Instagram after the final whistle to address his 22.3 million followers. “So unlucky not to come away with all the points today! The results will come. Big week coming up starting with Thursday’s game,” the 28-year-old wrote.

Notably, two of his former Barcelona loan team-mates responded in the comments. Roony Bardghji wrote “Man like Rashy”, while Fermin Lopez posted a string of appreciative emojis — a small but telling sign of the affection Rashford built during his Camp Nou spell. The forward had been linked with a permanent return to Barcelona following his loan, but has opted to remain at Old Trafford and rebuild his career under Carrick.

The draw leaves United’s Premier League form mixed — they were beaten 2-0 by Hull City on the opening day before bouncing back with a 5-2 win over Ipswich Town. Attention now turns to Thursday’s Champions League opener against Sabah FK, a fixture Carrick’s squad must prepare for quickly after Sunday’s late disappointment.
