Neville convinced Man Utd dressing room 'had a tear-up' after Martinez and Amad outbursts
Gary Neville believes Manchester United players have clashed internally following Lisandro Martinez's attack on sporting director Jason Wilcox and Amad's cryptic 'effing disgrace' social media post after the midweek defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Gary Neville is convinced Manchester United’s dressing room has erupted in a player-led confrontation after Lisandro Martinez’s public criticism of the club’s transfer policy and Amad’s inflammatory social media post following the 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
Speaking on his podcast after Saturday’s result at Old Trafford, the former United captain said he was certain the squad had addressed the fallout internally. “I think that dressing room’s definitely had a tear-up and they’ve had a meeting, 100 per cent,” Neville said. “There’s no way they’ve not dealt with that Martinez issue.”
Martinez had come out swinging after United’s defeat to Atletico Madrid in midweek, taking aim at sporting director Jason Wilcox and arguing the club should have invested more heavily in the summer transfer window. Hours later, teammate Amad posted a message on Snapchat reading “F***ing disgrace. I have no words.”
Head coach Michael Carrick addressed Amad’s post at his Friday press conference, saying it was intended as a show of support for Martinez rather than a dig at teammates — but he urged the winger to channel that emotion more constructively.
Neville was less diplomatic in his reading of events. “Amad Diallo’s Snapchat, saying ‘You’re an effing disgrace’ — well, that’s at his team-mate,” he said. “So they’re obviously launching each other. I think it’s got a bit about him, Amad, to be fair. So has Martinez — Martinez has got something about him.”
Despite the turbulence, Neville suggested the internal friction could ultimately benefit Carrick. “He needs somebody to start fighting back, he needs something to cause a moment,” he said. “Maybe Lisandro Martinez has done the best motivational speech he’s ever done for Manchester United on Tuesday night. Maybe he’s done them a favour.”
United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds leaves them still needing results to secure a fifth-place finish, and Neville cautioned against reading too much into a single point. “They still have to finish fifth,” he said. “Today’s a stepping stone, but we can’t get carried away.”
