Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Tottenham in the Premier League after Dominic Solanke headed home in the second minute of added time to cancel out Bryan Mbeumo’s second-half opener. The result has drawn sharp criticism of United’s midfield from two prominent pundits, with Gary Neville and Danny Murphy both questioning whether Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo can function as a viable partnership at this level.

Spurs had been reduced to ten men just five minutes after Mbeumo’s goal when Rodrigo Bentancur was shown a straight red card for pushing his head towards Luke Shaw. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Tottenham exposed United’s lack of midfield organisation to snatch a point through Solanke’s late header past Senne Lammens.

Speaking on Match of the Day, Murphy was damning in his assessment of United’s central midfield. “There was a lethargy about Manchester United and this midfield can’t control games,” he said. “It’s partly tactical, it’s partly personnel. They’re both technically gifted players who want to be on the ball going forward, but they’re not tracking runners or closing distances.”

Murphy went further, suggesting United may need to drop a forward into midfield to create a more solid three. “If they play like that against good teams, they’re going to get cut right open,” he added. “They’ve got to get back to basics — being harder to beat, closing the distances.”

Neville echoed those concerns on his podcast, stopping short of calling time on the pairing but making clear his patience is wearing thin. “Tielemans and Mainoo — I think we’ve seen enough of it now, not calling time on it, that’s probably too drastic,” he said. “But I’ve seen enough of it to think that’s not dynamic enough to play at this football club in the Premier League. They’re both good players, but sometimes they don’t knit together or suit together.”

Neville noted that substitute Carlos Baleba brought an immediate injection of energy when he came on, hinting that a change in personnel could be necessary if United are to tighten up in the coming weeks. The draw leaves questions hanging over Ruben Amorim’s side ahead of their next Premier League fixture.
