RC Lens beat Olympique Lyonnais 2-1 on Saturday in matchday 6 of Ligue 1, claiming their first victory since Dino Toppmöller’s sacking on 15 September and Yannick Cahuzac’s appointment as head coach.

The result takes on particular significance given the context. According to journalist Giovanni Castaldi, Toppmöller’s departure was not linked to sporting performance but to an internal crisis: “What happened with Toppmöller wasn’t a pitch problem, but a dressing-room problem and what was happening on a daily basis.” Castaldi clarified that the episode had constituted “an enormous shock” for a club usually presented as a model of management.

“Usually, Lens is the club everyone speaks well of, it’s brilliantly run, everything is perfect. There, there was an enormous shock and we had to see how the dressing room would digest it,” he added during the Téléfoot l’After programme on Sunday.

The journalist underlined the symbolic importance of this victory: “When players send a message, and the board listens, it’s important to immediately validate it on the pitch with a result, with a spirit. That’s why the players were extremely relieved.”

Thanks to this success, Lens climb to ninth place in the provisional standings with a record of two wins, one draw and three defeats in six matches.
