Nagelsmann favourite to replace Carrick at Manchester United, Deschamps in the frame
Under pressure after seven matches without a win and a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, Michael Carrick's future at Manchester United is seriously in doubt. Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly the priority of Manchester United's board to replace him.
Julian Nagelsmann is the frontrunner to take charge of Manchester United if Michael Carrick is sacked, according to journalist Florian Plettenberg. Didier Deschamps, available since his departure from the France national team after the 2026 World Cup, is also among the names being explored by Manchester United’s hierarchy, though he is not among the favourites.
Carrick’s situation at Old Trafford is deteriorating rapidly. The heavy defeat suffered on Tuesday against Como in the Champions League (4-1) has further weakened the English manager, already under pressure after a run of seven consecutive matches without a win. With only two victories in eleven matches across all competitions since the start of the season, United sit in a worrying 13th place in the Premier League.
The club’s board is officially maintaining their manager in position, but Sunday’s trip to Bournemouth is being presented as a turning point. Another defeat could hasten his departure.
Behind the scenes, Old Trafford’s decision-makers have reportedly already activated several leads. Besides Nagelsmann, the names of Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte and Fabian Hürzeler are circulating. Deschamps, meanwhile, is also being followed by Real Madrid, where he would represent Florentino Perez’s priority in the event of José Mourinho’s premature departure.
