Mourinho targets qualification first as injury-hit Madrid host Leipzig before Clásico

José Mourinho has reined in Real Madrid’s Champions League ambitions to a single near-term goal — reaching the 11 or 12 points he believes will be enough to qualify from the league phase — as Madrid prepare to host RB Leipzig on Wednesday, 22 October, in their third group fixture. A win would move them close to that threshold and extend a perfect European record, with Sunday’s Clásico at Camp Nou already casting a shadow over selection.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on 20 October, Mourinho outlined a two-stage plan: first secure qualification, then target a top-eight finish that would avoid the two-legged knockout play-off. He also warned that the points bar to stay out of the play-off places will be unusually high this season.

Madrid arrive with back-to-back wins. They recovered from 3-1 down in Rome to win 4-3, with Carlos Espí, Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger all scoring from corners in the final seven minutes, before beating Sevilla 4-1. After two matchdays they sat eighth with a goal difference of +2.

Mourinho cautioned against reading too much into Leipzig’s heavy defeat to Bayern Munich, pointing instead to their win over PSV as a truer measure of the German side’s quality. Leipzig come to the Spanish capital with one win, one defeat and a goal difference of -2.

The fixture carries personal threads for two Madrid players. Yan Diomande faces his former club after Madrid announced his signing from Leipzig on 6 August 2026, handing the forward a seven-year contract until 30 June 2033. Ibrahima Konaté, expected to start at centre-back for Madrid, spent four years at Leipzig between 2017 and 2021.

Three absences shape Mourinho’s options. Raúl Asencio is sidelined with a stress fracture in his right tibia, having undergone surgery performed by Dr Manuel Leyes on 1 October 2026 under the supervision of the club’s medical services. Rodrygo remains in the final stage of recovery and is still training individually. Ferland Mendy, who is not registered for the Champions League, trained with the group but will not feature.

There is positive news elsewhere. Éder Militão keeps his place after returning ahead of schedule against Sevilla, nearly six months after sustaining an injury against Alavés in April. Vinícius Júnior is back in the European squad while serving a four-match La Liga ban following his red card against Villarreal, and joins Endrick, Kylian Mbappé, Brahim Díaz, Espí and Diomande in a six-man forward group.

With Leipzig the final fixture before the trip to Camp Nou, Mourinho’s team selection will offer the first real clues about how he intends to approach the Clásico.
