Michael Oliver named referee for Canada v Morocco World Cup round-of-16 clash
Premier League official Michael Oliver will take charge of Canada's round-of-16 meeting with Morocco at Houston Stadium, with the winner advancing to face France or Paraguay in the quarter-finals.
Michael Oliver has been appointed to referee Canada’s FIFA World Cup 2026 round-of-16 tie against Morocco at Houston Stadium, with a place in the last eight on the line for both nations.
Oliver is one of only two English referees selected for this year’s tournament, alongside Anthony Taylor. The 41-year-old Premier League official missed his opening group-stage assignment — the Group E fixture between Ivory Coast and Ecuador — through injury, but returned to take charge of two further group games involving France, Norway, and a Netherlands versus Sweden encounter.
His World Cup experience stretches back to the 2022 tournament in Qatar, where he oversaw two group fixtures and Brazil’s quarter-final exit to Croatia on penalties. Domestically, Oliver holds the record as the youngest referee to take charge of a Premier League match, having made his debut in August 2010 at the age of 25 years and 182 days. He has now officiated 812 competitive fixtures in total, including Champions League matches and two FA Cup finals.
Oliver will be assisted by fellow Englishmen Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring. Dutch officials Danny Makkelie and Hessel Steegstra will serve as fourth official and reserve assistant referee respectively.
Canada, managed by Jesse Marsch, reached the round of 16 as Group A runners-up before eliminating South Africa in the first last-32 tie. Morocco, who will co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal, advanced from Group C before stunning the Netherlands on penalties.
The winner will face either France or Paraguay in the quarter-finals at Boston Stadium on 9 July.
