Rashford left in limbo as Barcelona snub £26m clause and United rule out third loan
Marcus Rashford's future at Manchester United is unresolved after Barcelona let his purchase option expire, having already signed Anthony Gordon for £69m. United want a permanent £40m sale but will reintegrate Rashford into the first team if no deal is struck.
Marcus Rashford is facing an uncertain summer after Barcelona allowed the option to buy him permanently to lapse, leaving the Manchester United winger without a confirmed destination ahead of pre-season.
Rashford spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at the Nou Camp, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists as Barcelona won La Liga. An option to purchase him for £26m was included in the agreement, and there had been a widespread expectation the Catalan club would activate it. Instead, Barcelona redirected their spending, agreeing a £69m deal to sign Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon before allowing the Rashford deadline to pass without triggering the clause.
The development has left United reassessing their position. The club remain keen to sell Rashford on a permanent basis, with a reported gentleman’s agreement in place that would allow him to leave for £40m — provided the destination is not Barcelona, Liverpool, or Manchester City. A third loan move has been ruled out entirely.
Should no permanent transfer materialise before pre-season, United have indicated Rashford will train with the first team and be available for selection — a softening of the stance that had previously pointed toward an inevitable exit.
Rashford himself has been measured in public, saying after the La Liga title win: “I am not a magician, but if I was, I would stay. We will see.” With his immediate future unresolved, the 27-year-old says his attention has now shifted to England’s World Cup campaign. “I was very clear with everyone involved before the World Cup — I wanted it done before,” he told reporters. “If it’s not, I wanted it to wait until after. I want to be fully present in the moment. We’re fighting for something special.”
