Lionel Messi is on the verge of becoming owner of Eldense, a Spanish second-division club, after reaching a preliminary agreement with Colombian investment fund TH, led by Juan Carlos Trujillo. The operation, whose amount has not been officially disclosed, would involve an investment exceeding €12 million — the latest known offer for the club’s acquisition.

Eldense, based in Elda near Alicante in south-eastern Spain, is experiencing a difficult start to the season: the club sits in 20th place out of 22 in Liga 2, with only two points on the board after four matchdays. This delicate sporting context would not have deterred the Inter Miami player’s ambitions, who sees in this acquisition an opportunity to establish himself durably in Spanish football.

This project is not Messi’s first investment in the sector. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner already owns UE Cornella, a Catalan fifth-division club, acquired a few months ago. The acquisition of Eldense nonetheless represents a significant step up, both on the sporting and financial fronts.

According to Spanish sports daily Marca, Messi and his family are considering returning to settle in Spain at the end of his playing career and upon expiration of his contract with Inter Miami. The official announcement of the transaction is expected in the coming days, once the final legal details are settled.
