McParland escapes serious injury scare after deep laceration cuts Prem final short

Northampton Saints scrum-half Archie McParland suffered a deep laceration above the knee that forced him off after just 11 minutes of the Gallagher Premiership final, but director of rugby Phil Dowson has confirmed the wound should not threaten the 21-year-old's place in England's July Test squad.

Archie McParland avoided serious damage despite a gruesome knee wound that ended his Gallagher Premiership final after only 11 minutes, Northampton Saints director of rugby Phil Dowson confirmed following his side’s 26-17 victory over Exeter Chiefs at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.

The 21-year-old scrum-half was hurt while attempting to stop Campbell Ridl from scoring Exeter’s opening try, and was immediately withdrawn. Captain George Furbank described the wound as “grim”, but Dowson moved to ease concerns, revealing it was a laceration rather than a structural injury. “The only thing I have on Archie is he’s been strapped up, he had a deep laceration above the knee that couldn’t then be dealt with. Furbs says it’s grim,” Dowson said.

McParland’s exit brought Alex Mitchell off the bench in circumstances neither player nor coaching staff had planned for. Mitchell had been managing a hamstring injury picked up in England camp in May and was considered a doubt heading into the final. He ultimately played around 70 minutes — more, Dowson admitted, than had been intended.

“He’s exhausted,” Dowson said of Mitchell. “He was probably a little disappointed that Archie went off as well. Credit to Mitch, he hasn’t trained a huge amount, he hasn’t played recently, and to put in that performance together, although rusty at times, I thought was exceptional. Very hard to fluster Mitch, because he came on and did very, very well.”

Both scrum-halves are currently part of Steve Borthwick’s England setup, where McParland is among five nines in camp and is pushing for a first Test cap. England face South Africa, Fiji and Argentina in July, and the initial prognosis suggests the laceration will not derail McParland’s bid to feature in that series.

Northampton’s win was their second Premiership title in three years, a result that underlines the club’s standing as one of English rugby’s dominant forces heading into the international window.
