Mbappé refuses to wear Ceuta support shirt, sparks controversy in Spain

Kylian Mbappé may have weighed heavily on Real Madrid’s 2-3 victory at Elche on Tuesday evening in La Liga — with a goal and an assist to his name — but it is a pre-match gesture that is monopolising debate in Spain. Along with Vinicius Jr and Ibrahima Konaté, the French forward took to the pitch with the Ceuta support shirt rolled up to his chest, before removing it even before going to greet the opposing team.

The context makes the matter sensitive. The Spanish enclave located north of Morocco is experiencing an unprecedented migration crisis: more than 70,000 irregular crossings have been recorded there in a matter of weeks. To mark their solidarity, Spanish football authorities had asked players from both teams to wear a shirt bearing the slogan « Todos somos Caballas » — « We are all Ceuta residents » — before kick-off in this sixth-round fixture.

The gesture by the Madrid trio immediately set social media and Iberian television studios ablaze. For part of the Spanish press and supporters, Mbappé’s attitude, captain of the French national team, is perceived as deliberate disrespect towards the local population. Others believe the players simply wanted to avoid being instrumentalised in a political debate that deeply divides public opinion and the political establishment.

The controversy unfolds in an already tense climate. A few days earlier, at Santiago-Bernabéu during the Ligue des Champions match against Inter Milan, sovereigntist chants — « Ceuta is not for sale » — and banners with political demands had already animated the stands. On the eve of the match at Elche, Betis’s Moroccan international Ez Abde had also been forced to issue a statement to clarify his position after wearing the same shirt, insisting on the humanitarian dimension of the gesture and denying any geopolitical significance.

On the pitch, Mbappé had nonetheless delivered a decisive performance. Author of Real Madrid’s second goal from a Yan Diomande cross, he then provided the winning goal to Carlos Espi in added time, allowing Real to win despite a more contested match than expected.
