Mbappé blames tactics and his own display as France fall short against Spain
Kylian Mbappé took responsibility for France's 2-0 semifinal defeat to Spain at the 2026 World Cup, criticising the team's sloppy technical play, poor midfield setup, and his own inability to create chances.
Kylian Mbappé offered a candid self-assessment after France were eliminated from the 2026 World Cup by Spain, admitting a 2-0 semifinal defeat on Tuesday exposed serious flaws in both his own performance and his team’s tactical approach.
Mbappé, who had scored eight goals in the tournament heading into the match, managed just 15 touches in the first half — the fewest of any forward on the pitch — and his best opportunity, a shot in the 67th minute, deflected off Marc Cucurella and went wide with Spain already two goals ahead.
“We were too sloppy technically,” Mbappé said post-match. “We could not hurt them when we could have. Even when we recovered the ball, our first touches were not good enough. That gives a defeat.”
Spain’s opener came from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute after Lucas Digne fouled teenager Lamine Yamal. Mbappé attempted to persuade referee Ivan Barton to overturn the decision, but the call stood and Mikel Oyarzabal converted to put Spain ahead for good.
The France captain was also critical of the tactical structure France deployed against Spain’s midfield. “We were three against two in midfield and against Spain, that’s hard,” he said, per GOAL. “It’s a team who loves to have control of the game, control of the ball. That’s what we let them do. We let the midfield too much time to play.”
Mbappé accepted personal responsibility as captain. “At the end of the day, you take all the glory when you win. When you don’t win … it’s part of the game. As the captain, I have to take all the responsibility, and I have no problem with that. We wanted to go to the final. We didn’t go.”
He was also shown a yellow card in the 86th minute after colliding with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón, who had been bending to collect the ball.
Spain midfielder Rodri acknowledged the threat France posed throughout. “They can punish you at every single moment, so I think the focus in every single minute was key in this game. Unbelievable effort by everyone.”
France will now face a third-place playoff, while Mbappé’s Golden Boot race with Lionel Messi — who also has eight goals in this tournament — remains unresolved. It is the second time in three World Cups that Mbappé has finished on the losing side against Messi’s Argentina, having scored four times in the 2022 final in Qatar before France lost on penalties. France’s only World Cup triumph came in Russia in 2018.
