Aubameyang leaves Marseille for Deportivo La Corogne, second attacking departure of the transfer window
After Mason Greenwood, Olympique de Marseille is parting ways with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. At 37 years old, the Gabonese striker is set to join Deportivo La Corogne, newly promoted to La Liga, for €1.5 million.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is leaving Olympique de Marseille this summer to join Deportivo La Corogne, according to Foot Mercato. The Galician club, freshly promoted to La Liga, has agreed to pay the €1.5 million demanded by Marseille to complete the transfer of the 37-year-old Gabonese striker.
Aubameyang had been persistently linked with Çorum FK, a Turkish club that offered him a two-year contract worth €3.5 million net per season. The former Arsenal striker ultimately opted for a different project, in Spain.
This departure comes just days after Mason Greenwood left for Fenerbahçe. Marseille thus finds itself selling two strikers within a matter of days, under the combined pressure of the DNCG and UEFA, who are closely monitoring the accounts of the Phocaean club.
New sporting director Grégory Lorenzi, presented on Wednesday 15 July, confirmed without hesitation the direction of Marseille’s transfer market. “The priority is to restore financial health. We have made commitments to the DNCG and UEFA that we must respect. This necessarily involves sales or loans to reduce the wage bill. Without this, we will not be able to register new players. That is the reality of our situation today,” he said at a press conference.
Lorenzi did, however, seek to clarify: “We will listen to interesting offers for certain key players. Saying otherwise would be lying. But that does not mean everyone will leave. Our role is to find the best balance between financial imperatives and the team’s sporting competitiveness.”
Aubameyang’s salary was among the heaviest in the squad, making him one of the first candidates identified for departure. His transfer to Deportivo La Corogne thus significantly eases Marseille’s wage bill, a sine qua non condition for the club to register new signings by the end of the summer transfer window.
