Mathys Tel scores first Spurs goal to seal London derby victory over Chelsea
Tottenham won 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, benefiting from an own goal by Mike Penders and a late strike by Mathys Tel to secure a second consecutive Premier League victory.
Tottenham dominated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, securing a second straight Premier League win and climbing to 12th place in the table with nine points.
The Spurs controlled proceedings throughout, displaying nearly 70% possession, but the match remained goalless until the second half. Deputising for injured Emiliano Martinez, goalkeeper Mike Penders gifted the visitors the opening goal by punching a corner directly into his own net in the 77th minute.
Chelsea were then reduced to ten men following Cole Palmer’s red card. Already cautioned for a petulant gesture towards Mateus Fernandes in the 71st minute, the England international received a second yellow card three minutes later for a challenge on Conor Gallagher.
Mathys Tel sealed the victory in the 87th minute with his first goal of the season in a Spurs shirt. A surprise starter — he had not begun a Premier League match since 5 September — the French youth international finished off a run down the left wing with a low, unstoppable strike.
This London derby victory allows Tottenham to revive their season after a difficult start. Chelsea, fourth with 13 points, now trail the top two by eight points, pending the rest of the day’s results.
