Oscar Bobb’s first Premier League goal for Fulham sealed a 1-0 victory at Coventry’s CBS Arena on Sunday, lifting Álvaro Arbeloa’s side out of the relegation zone and leaving Frank Lampard’s Coventry second-bottom of the Championship table.

The Norwegian winger, signed for £27m from Manchester City in January, produced a moment of individual quality in the 80th minute — twisting into the box before bending a shot into the far corner for only his second goal for the club in any competition. It was enough to hand Fulham their first away win in nine attempts, a run stretching back to February.

The result was built on Fulham’s control of possession, though they struggled for much of the afternoon to convert that dominance into clear-cut chances — a theme that has defined their season. Josh King came closest before Bobb’s winner, rattling the top of the post from inside the box in the 18th minute, with Alex Iwobi sending the rebound high and wide.

Coventry, who had beaten Newcastle 4-1 in their previous home match, offered little to suggest they could repeat that performance. Bobby Thomas headed wide from a Rudoni free-kick, and Brandon Thomas-Asante twice failed to capitalise on opportunities — heading wide from a Jay Dasilva cross and then shooting tamely at Bernd Leno after an Antonee Robinson backpass went astray.

VAR was called into action twice without changing the outcome. Calvin Bassey went down in the box before half-time claiming a shirt-pull, but replays showed both players had hold of each other and the referee waved play on. Early in the second half, a Rudoni free-kick struck Iwobi on the arm, but with his arms by his side, no penalty was given.

Coventry suffered a further setback when the in-form Bobby Thomas — praised by Lampard earlier in the week — hobbled off injured, adding to the pressure on a side now entrenched in the relegation places. Fulham, meanwhile, will take renewed confidence from a win that eases the pressure on Arbeloa and ends a difficult run on the road.
