Maresca flags Arsenal's squad depth as Chelsea set sights on Premier League title

Enzo Maresca has cited Arsenal’s strength in depth as the standard Chelsea must match if they are to challenge for the Premier League title, speaking after his side’s victory over Coventry on Saturday.

The Chelsea head coach highlighted the Gunners’ rotation in the opening weeks of the season, noting that Arsenal made five changes in each of their first games following the Community Shield — bringing on players of the calibre of Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Eberechi Eze, and Jordi Hincapie.

“If you see since the Community Shield, we played the Community Shield and then Arsenal played two more games and had five changes in every game — two World Cup winners in Merino and Zubimendi, two English players in Madueke and Eze and I think the other was Hincapie,” Maresca said. “If you want to be there in the end, you need options. Arsenal have options, we have options. More teams have options. But it’s not just us. I’m very happy with the options we have and it’s something that is important for us if we want to compete.”

Chelsea’s own depth was tested against Coventry when Nico O’Reilly suffered a back injury in the warm-up, forcing Enzo Fernandez into the starting XI after just two training sessions with the club. The Argentine adapted quickly, while Elliot Anderson was voted man of the match inside the stadium and fellow summer signing Ayyoub Bouaddi came off the bench to help see the game out as Coventry pushed late.

The arrivals of Fernandez, Anderson, and Bouaddi form the core of a near-complete midfield rebuild at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have invested close to £430m this summer after generating over £300m in sales, a turnover that also saw Pep Guardiola’s departure from rivals Manchester City — along with Rodri and Bernardo Silva — reshape the Premier League landscape heading into the new season.

Maresca’s comments suggest he views squad quality not as a luxury but as a prerequisite for any side serious about going the distance in the league. With Arsenal widely regarded as early title favourites, Chelsea’s Italian head coach appears intent on ensuring his side can match them rotation for rotation across a long campaign.
