Vinicius Jr in Madrid press crosshairs ahead of Madrid derby

Madrid’s press is turning on Vinicius Jr following Real Madrid’s hard-fought victory away at Elche (2-3), openly calling for José Mourinho to leave him on the bench ahead of the Madrid derby.

With six wins in seven matches since the start of the season, Merengues’ record remains solid on paper. However, it appears dull compared to FC Barcelona, which is stringing together dominant performances — including a 7-2 thrashing of Santander midweek. It is in this context that the daily AS chose to target several players considered untouchable in Mourinho’s starting XI.

Vinicius Jr is the primary target. The Brazilian is struggling to rediscover his best form, and AS notes that Mourinho himself did not spare him at Elche, substituting him in the 68th minute. Journalist Tomas Roncero argues for a frank rotation: “Mourinho arrived, among other reasons, for this precise reason. A manager who, throughout his career, has proven he will not shy away from any big name. Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa were consumed by these outsized egos, prisoners of the figure of magnificent footballers who tend to flare up in favourable situations.”

The name emerging as an alternative is Yan Diomandé. The winger made a remarkable appearance at Elche, first on the right flank against Vinicius, then repositioned on the left after the Brazilian’s exit. Roncero is full of praise: “Yan Diomandé was exceptional. A real nightmare for Elche’s defence, he eliminated his opponents with startling ease and defended like a lion in support of Marc Cucurella. Exemplary.” Substitute Espi, who made another decisive appearance, is also cited among players who deserve more playing time.

AS concludes its plea with a direct appeal to the Portuguese manager: “Mourinho, you hold it in your hands. Do not let your hand tremble.” The final decision rests with the coach, who must decide before a Madrid derby with considerable sporting and symbolic stakes.
