Manchester United sell academy graduate Collyer to West Brom in £7.6m deal

Manchester United have agreed to sell academy graduate Toby Collyer to West Bromwich Albion in a deal worth an initial £3m that could rise to £7.6m through add-ons, according to The Athletic. The 22-year-old midfielder, who came through United’s youth system, made 13 first-team appearances after his debut in the 2024/25 season but has been squeezed out by a significant summer rebuild in the middle of the park.

Collyer spent last season away from Old Trafford on loan, first at West Brom and then at Hull City, who earned promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs. Injuries, however, restricted him to just 17 appearances across both clubs.

He returned to Manchester for Michael Carrick’s first pre-season, but United have now opted to cash in. West Brom beat off competition from Championship rivals Hull and promotion favourites Middlesbrough to secure his signature, with Collyer choosing a return to the Hawthorns.

The majority of the add-ons in the deal are considered achievable, while others are contingent on West Brom returning to the Premier League, competing in Europe, and Collyer earning a senior England call-up. United have also inserted a sell-on clause worth approximately 40 per cent.

Collyer’s departure is the latest piece of midfield business at Old Trafford this summer. Casemiro left at the end of last season, and United have moved swiftly to reshape the department, bringing in Andrey Santos from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, and most recently Carlos Baleba from Brighton in a deal worth £65m plus £5m in add-ons.

Carrick was effusive about the Baleba signing. “We’re delighted to have Carlos. He has huge potential, massive potential. It’s a really exciting signing for us,” the United manager said. “The quality that he has, and the attributes he has, offsets the balance of the group a little bit — different strengths, different combinations. There’s so much more to come from him as well, which, with the player that he already is, is exciting for us.”

Baleba will not be available for United’s upcoming fixture against Ipswich Town as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury.
