Manchester United seal £50m Santos signing from Chelsea as debut looms this weekend
Manchester United have completed the £50 million signing of midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea, with the 22-year-old Brazilian penning a five-year deal at Old Trafford and already training at Carrington ahead of a potential debut against Wrexham in Helsinki.
Manchester United have signed midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £50 million, with the 22-year-old completing a five-year contract at Old Trafford — with the option of a further year — on Monday.
Santos joined his new teammates for training at Carrington on the same day the deal was confirmed, and manager Michael Carrick could hand him his first appearance in United colours as early as this weekend, when the club travel to Helsinki for a pre-season friendly against Championship side Wrexham.
Having not been involved in international duty this summer, the six-cap Brazil international was able to link up with United immediately for pre-season preparations. Santos and fellow former Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount are currently the only senior midfield options available to Carrick.
Santos joined Chelsea from Vasco da Gama at the age of 18 but was unable to break into the first team at Stamford Bridge. United director of football Jason Wilcox expressed confidence that the move represents a strong fit for both club and player.
“Andrey is an outstanding midfielder with excellent technical qualities and the ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch,” Wilcox said. “He was a key target for us in an important position, so we are delighted that he will join Michael’s squad so early in pre-season.”
Wilcox also pointed to Santos’s long-term potential as a key factor in the club’s pursuit. “Despite already having extensive experience, leadership abilities and proving his talent at the highest level, Andrey still has enormous potential to develop further, and we cannot wait to see him flourish at Manchester United.”
The signing adds to United’s summer business as Carrick shapes his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
