Manchester United loan teenager Chido Obi to Willem II after English deadline passes

Manchester United have announced that 18-year-old striker Chido Obi will join Willem II on a season-long loan, with the deal completed under the Dutch transfer deadline — which ran until midnight on Wednesday — rather than England’s 11pm Tuesday cut-off.

Obi made his United senior debut in February 2025 against Tottenham and has accumulated eight first-team appearances in total. Before breaking into the senior squad, he was a prolific presence for the Under-21s, scoring 15 goals in 31 games last season.

The move is the latest in a wave of academy departures at Old Trafford this summer. Jack Moorhouse joined Dundee on loan on deadline day, with that deal confirmed on Wednesday evening, while Ethan Wheatley, Jacob Devaney, and Jayce Fitzgerald have also headed out on temporary deals.

United have also cashed in on a number of academy graduates permanently. Midfielder Toby Collyer completed a move to West Brom in a deal worth up to £7.6 million, and goalkeeper Radek Vitek joined promotion-chasing Middlesbrough in a transfer that could reach £14 million.

In total, 26 players left United this summer either permanently or on loan. The club had hoped to raise more funds through outright sales but again found it difficult to move on players considered surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
