Manchester United fans to protest outside Old Trafford over season ticket ban crackdown before derby

Manchester United supporter group The 1958 has organised a peaceful protest outside Old Trafford ahead of Sunday’s 4.30pm Manchester derby, urging fans to unite in opposition to what they have called a “season ticket ban fiasco” stemming from the club’s summer crackdown on ticket touting.

The group has asked supporters from all fan factions to set aside past disagreements and assemble at 3pm outside the Bishop Blaize pub near the ground. In a statement, The 1958 declared that “a line has been crossed”, adding: “For generations, match-going Reds have given their time, money and loyalty to Manchester United, home and away. That loyalty deserves to be treated with respect.”

The protest follows widespread criticism of the club’s handling of an independent review of ticketing platform activity covering March to June, which Manchester United said in August had “uncovered significant and organised touting”. The club acknowledged, however, that the process had “caused significant concern and distress for some supporters” and conceded it had “underestimated how common sharing account usernames and passwords was”.

The 1958 co-signed a joint statement in July condemning the measures, characterising the club’s approach as “ban first and ask questions later”. Sunday’s demonstration is a continuation of that pressure, with the group calling on the club to present clear evidence before imposing sanctions.

“This is not about one group or one individual,” the spokesperson added. “It is about how Manchester United treats its match-going supporters. It may not affect you today, it may not next time, but that day is coming for all of us. Show the evidence. Lift the bans.”

The timing of the protest adds further significance: United head into the derby sitting five points behind Manchester City in the Premier League table, meaning the atmosphere inside and outside Old Trafford on Sunday carries weight both on and off the pitch.
