Manchester United have pocketed £38m from the permanent sale of Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli and agreed a £35m deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, as the club’s summer rebuild under Michael Carrick begins to take shape ahead of a return to Champions League football.

Hojlund’s move to Napoli was finalised after the Serie A club secured their own Champions League place, with United set to receive €44m (£38m) for the striker following his loan spell in Italy last season. The fee represents a significant financial boost as United look to fund incoming transfers this summer.

Alongside the Hojlund windfall, United have struck an agreement to bring in Ederson from Atalanta for £35m, with a further £3.8m available in add-ons. The deal is yet to be made official but represents the club’s first confirmed incoming business of the window.

The departures have not been limited to Hojlund. Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, and Tyrell Malacia have all left Old Trafford upon the expiry of their contracts, with the club confirming all three exits. The removal of their wages from United’s payroll is expected to give Carrick considerably more financial flexibility as he prepares to compete across four competitions next season.

The future of Marcus Rashford also remains unresolved. Barcelona declined to exercise their option to sign the England international for £26m, leaving his long-term status at Old Trafford uncertain.

United have been linked with further midfield reinforcements beyond Ederson. West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a prominent target, though the Hammers are reportedly valuing the playmaker at £80m. West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville has also been mentioned in connection with a move to Old Trafford, with the Netherlands international said to carry a price tag of around £50m.

Carrick faces the challenge of assembling a squad capable of competing in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup, making further arrivals at Old Trafford likely before the transfer window closes.
