Manchester City confirmed the signing of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest on Thursday in a deliberately low-key announcement, with the club using just 82 words to announce a deal worth £116m — the largest fee ever paid for a British player.

Anderson, 23, is currently on international duty with England at the FIFA World Cup, having completed his medical in Kansas. City’s brief statement confirmed the formalities of the move will be finalised upon his return to England, with the club wishing Anderson and the England squad well for the remainder of the tournament.

“Manchester City and Nottingham Forest have reached an agreement for the transfer of Elliot Anderson,” the club wrote on their website. “Anderson, 23, is currently competing at the FIFA World Cup with England and has completed a medical in Kansas. The formalities of the move will be finalised upon his return to England.”

The restrained approach was a calculated one. Transfers involving players at major international tournaments are notoriously complex, with national teams protective of their squads’ focus during competitions. A more public announcement, complete with the usual fanfare of unveiling photographs and interviews, risked unsettling Anderson and drawing the ire of the Football Association.

England head coach Thomas Tuchel had already addressed City’s interest publicly before the deal was confirmed, striking a measured tone. “He’s a top player — the full package,” Tuchel told reporters. “He seems not affected. I won’t speak to him about it. It should push him because it’s proof of what he’s capable of.”

Tuchel added that he had seen no signs of distraction from Anderson in training. “What I see on the training pitch is no distractions, full commitment — that’s what comes from him,” he said. “Even if a transfer is completed, hopefully he stays the same — a humble, determined, hungry football player.”

By handling the announcement with minimal noise, City demonstrated an awareness that antagonising England’s management could have delayed the deal further and, more importantly, disrupted a player they have just invested a record fee in. The approach reflects the kind of institutional diplomacy that serves clubs well in the long run, preserving goodwill with the national setup ahead of future transfer windows.
