Man United's formation switch at U21 level puts 15-year-old JJ Gabriel on path to first-team debut

Manchester United’s under-21 side has switched to a 4-2-3-1 formation to mirror Michael Carrick’s senior setup, a structural change that should accelerate the development of the club’s most promising academy players — none more so than 15-year-old JJ Gabriel.

U21 boss Adam Lawrence made the formation change as part of a deliberate policy of aligning the academy’s tactical identity with the first team. The move means young players arriving in Carrick’s squad will already be familiar with their positional responsibilities, reducing the adjustment period that has historically slowed the progress of homegrown talent.

Gabriel is the player most directly affected. The teenage attacking midfielder scored 26 goals in 29 games for the U18s last season before stepping up to the U21s, where he has scored twice and registered two assists in his first two appearances. The formation change allows him to develop in the No.10 role currently occupied by Bruno Fernandes in the senior side.

The U21s have also replicated Carrick’s use of Matheus Cunha as a false nine, deploying Amir Ibragimov in the same position. According to a report from the Daily Mail, the decisions to send Chido Obi out on loan and allow Louie Bradbury to join Stoke City may point to a longer-term strategy built around the false-nine concept — a shift that could open an additional route into the first team for Gabriel, given his prolific record as an academy forward.

Carrick was in attendance when Gabriel made his U21 debut last month, watching the teenager score and provide two assists in a 5-0 win over Ipswich Town. The United manager was openly complimentary afterwards.

“I thought the boys played ever so well, actually,” Carrick said. “Really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see the quality. I really enjoyed the game. Really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really pleasing.”

Gabriel is already eligible to play in the Premier League this season and featured for the first team during pre-season. Carrick has repeatedly praised the youngster in public, and his continued attendance at both U21 and U18 fixtures signals that the pathway from academy to senior squad is under active consideration rather than distant aspiration.
