Manchester United face a reported £3 million compensation bill payable to Newcastle United if they move to appoint Eddie Howe as their next manager, according to Chronicle Live. Howe departed St. James’ Park in July after five years in charge, but the terms of his exit mean a significant pay-out would be owed to his former club.

Newcastle were reluctant to let Howe go when he informed the board of his intention to step down, yet ultimately accepted his decision. Because Howe had several years remaining on a contract that was extended in summer 2024 — worth approximately £6 million per year — United would be required to cover the outstanding value, with talkSPORT placing that figure at around £3 million.

The potential liability is compounded by the fact that United also agreed to release several members of Howe’s backroom staff, including Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone. Speculation persists that the group could return to management together, adding further weight to the compensation calculation.

Howe is said to be receptive to taking the Old Trafford role and is reportedly on a two-man shortlist alongside former Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann. Newcastle’s official statement in August confirmed the departures of Howe, Tindall, Graeme Jones, Purches, Weatherstone and head of performance Dan Hodges.

For now, interim manager Michael Carrick remains in charge at United and is set to lead the side in their Premier League fixture against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend. United’s hierarchy is understood to be giving Carrick time to stabilise results before making a permanent appointment.
