Carrick survives Manchester United crisis talks as board splits over potential successor
Michael Carrick has been given more time to turn around Manchester United's dismal Premier League start, but internal disagreement over a potential replacement is reported to have played a key role in the decision to retain him.
Michael Carrick will remain Manchester United manager heading into this weekend’s Premier League fixture against Chelsea, after crisis talks at Carrington on Monday concluded without a change in the dugout — though the situation remains far from settled.
The pressure on Carrick had intensified sharply following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth that left United staring at their worst-ever Premier League start. Pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both publicly suggested his tenure was nearing its end, and the mood around Old Trafford was described as mutinous, though much of the fan frustration was directed at the club’s hierarchy rather than Carrick personally.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Jason Wilcox arrived at Carrington as early as 9am on Monday to discuss the club’s ongoing crisis. Carrick was also on site during the afternoon but was not part of those discussions, instead choosing to watch United’s under-21 side face Hull City in a behind-closed-doors fixture. He arrived at 1:50pm and departed around 5pm.
By the end of the day, the decision had been made to give Carrick more time. He returned to lead first-team training on Tuesday morning at his usual 7:30am start, providing some stability ahead of the Chelsea game.
An unnamed player quoted by BBC Sport indicated there is at least some dressing-room support for the manager: “The feeling is that we all want to put it right. Players, staff, everyone.”
However, according to The Sun, a significant factor in Carrick keeping his job was the board’s failure to reach unanimous agreement on who should replace him. United are said to hold a list of potential candidates, but an inability to settle on a successor reportedly made the case for continuity more compelling in the short term.
Carrick’s position therefore remains precarious. He has been handed a stay of execution rather than a vote of confidence, and the outcome of the Chelsea fixture is likely to weigh heavily on whatever decision United’s leadership makes next.
