Man United drop EFL Trophy and National League Cup to ease academy load after Champions League return

Manchester United have withdrawn from the EFL Trophy and National League Cup to manage their academy players' fixture burden, after the first team's Champions League qualification also brought the under-19s back into the UEFA Youth League for 2026-27.

Manchester United have pulled out of the EFL Trophy and National League Cup ahead of the 2026-27 season, citing an overstretched fixture schedule for their academy players following the first team’s return to the Champions League.

With the senior side back in Europe’s top club competition, United’s under-19s will also re-enter the UEFA Youth League — a return that, combined with existing commitments in Premier League 2, the Premier League International Cup, the U18 Premier League, and the FA Youth Cup, left the club’s Professional Development Phase (PDP) group facing an unmanageable calendar.

After internal discussions, the club decided to exit the two competitions rather than the Premier League International Cup, a choice driven by the variety of opposition the latter provides. Fixtures against overseas academy sides — including last season’s match against Real Madrid at Old Trafford — were cited as particularly valuable in exposing young players to different styles of play.

The decision also reflects a shift in United’s broader academy philosophy. The club anticipates fielding a smaller under-21 squad this season and plans to be more selective in youth recruitment. Greater emphasis will be placed on individual development and creating more opportunities for the most talented youngsters to train alongside the first team, rather than cycling through a congested match schedule.

Old Trafford insiders stressed that United remain committed to both the EFL Trophy and the National League Cup in principle. The club has competed in the EFL Trophy since 2019 and entered the National League Cup for the first time last season. Officials said they plan to review the games programme before the 2027-28 campaign and may opt to rejoin both competitions at that point.
