Man City face Porto in Champions League opener days before Old Trafford derby

Manchester City will travel to Porto on Tuesday 8 September to open their Champions League campaign, four days before facing Manchester United at Old Trafford in what shapes up as a demanding week of fixtures for Pep Guardiola’s side.

UEFA’s scheduling gives City a meaningful edge over their derby rivals: United host Sabah on the Thursday, leaving them two fewer days of recovery before the same Sunday showdown. City, meanwhile, have the full week to prepare after their European trip.

The Porto fixture lands at the start of a more congested run for City, with the Carabao Cup following a week later before a three-week international break at the end of September. It is the only European game before that pause, meaning the squad will have some breathing room before the fixture list tightens again.

City have drawn one of the statistically toughest schedules among the 36 teams in the Champions League’s new league-phase format. Their home fixtures are against PSG, Sporting CP, Napoli and AEK Athens, while they face away trips to Barcelona, Porto, RB Leipzig and RC Lens. The visit to Camp Nou carries an added subplot: midfielder Rodri, who left City in the summer, will line up against his former club. Defenders Josko Gvardiol and Abdukodir Khusanov will also return to Leipzig and Lens respectively.

The first six games are scheduled before Christmas, with the final two in January. Finishing in the top eight guarantees a place in the last 16; teams placed ninth to 24th enter a play-off round for the remaining spots. City reached the top eight last season but were eliminated by Real Madrid in the first knockout stage.

On the domestic front, City have made a bright start under the new campaign, coming from behind to beat Bournemouth before thrashing Crystal Palace. A home game against Coventry precedes the derby, meaning City could arrive at Old Trafford on 13 September with a perfect Premier League record intact.
