Maguire, Mount and Mbeumo among United players set for Carrick's first pre-season
Manchester United return to Carrington on Thursday for Michael Carrick's first pre-season as head coach, with several high-profile names available after missing World Cup selection. New signing Ederson will be absent after receiving a late call-up to Brazil's squad.
Manchester United begin pre-season training at Carrington on Thursday as Michael Carrick oversees his first full summer in charge, with a sizeable group of senior players ready to report despite the expanded 48-team World Cup still ongoing.
Carrick guided United to third place in the second half of last season across 17 games and was subsequently handed a two-year contract. His first pre-season friendly is scheduled against Wrexham in Helsinki on Saturday, 18 July.
Among those available from day one is Harry Maguire, who publicly expressed his disappointment at missing Thomas Tuchel’s England squad and has had a full summer to recover. Fellow England internationals Luke Shaw and Mason Mount were also left out of Tuchel’s selection and will be on the training pitch. Leny Yoro missed out on France’s squad, while Patrick Dorgu’s Denmark did not qualify for the tournament.
In attack, Bryan Mbeumo is available after Cameroon failed to qualify, as is Benjamin Sesko following Slovenia’s absence from the World Cup. Joshua Zirkzee did not retain his place in the Netherlands squad.
Carrick will be without two players through injury. Matthijs de Ligt is still recovering from back surgery, while Manuel Ugarte faces a lengthy absence after sustaining a suspected ACL injury while representing Uruguay at the World Cup.
Some players have already been eliminated from the tournament and are expected back shortly. Tyler Fletcher’s Scotland exited in the group stage, with the 19-year-old set to return early in pre-season. Altay Bayindir’s Turkey also failed to progress from the groups. Amad, who scored for Ivory Coast in their last-32 defeat to Norway, is expected back in the third week of July.
One notable absentee from the first day will be new signing Ederson. United agreed a fee of £35 million, plus £3.8 million in add-ons, to sign the 26-year-old from Atalanta, but a late call-up to the Brazil squad means he will not be present at the start of pre-season. No new signings are therefore expected at Carrington on Thursday as the club continues to work on further reinforcements for Carrick.
