Alexis Mac Allister has revealed that Liverpool informed him they would not be offering him a new contract this summer, leaving the Argentina midfielder hurt and uncertain about his long-term future at Anfield — even as the club spent over £200m on new signings and handed fellow midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai a fresh five-year deal.

The 27-year-old, who joined from Brighton for £35m in 2023, is now in the penultimate year of his current deal. Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League fixture against Atlético Madrid — a club he confirmed had been interested in signing him — Mac Allister did not hide his disappointment.

“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad,” he said. “I think I give 100 per cent for this football club every single day in training, games. I see Dominik and Ryan [Gravenberch] renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad I didn’t get mine.”

Mac Allister confirmed he had genuine options to leave in the summer transfer window. “There was a chance,” he said, but added that he ultimately felt Liverpool was the right place for him. “There were options to leave this summer but I think right now I am in the right club and I have the right mindset to give my 100 per cent to the club.”

The World Cup winner said Liverpool offered no direct explanation for the decision, with communication handled through his agent. “There wasn’t any direct conversation with me, it was with my agent,” he said. “What I got from my agent was that they were not in the position to renew me. It’s really sad because we won the Premier League together, we went through difficult times as well together and I always give my best.”

Despite the snub, Mac Allister insists he remains committed and hopes his performances can change the club’s thinking. “Maybe it is going to depend on how I perform during these years, like every football player, and they are right to make the decision,” he said. “The fans don’t need to worry as I will give 100 per cent and maybe they change their minds.”

His affection for the club appears genuine. “I love being here, this is something special,” he added. “As a player it sometimes happens you are at a club for a long time and don’t realise where you are, but that doesn’t happen to me.”
