Mac Allister admits Liverpool contract snub leaves him 'very very sad' as wait drags on

Alexis Mac Allister has publicly expressed his frustration at Liverpool’s decision not to offer him a new contract, saying the situation leaves him “very very sad” as two of his midfield rivals have already secured long-term extensions at Anfield.

The Argentine international, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2028, revealed that Liverpool communicated their position not directly to him but through his agent — informing him they were not in a position to extend his contract at this stage. “There was no direct conversation with me, it was with my agent,” Mac Allister said. “I don’t want to say things they never said, but what I got from my agent is they weren’t in a position to renew me.”

The 26-year-old, who joined Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp and won the Premier League with the club just over a year ago, acknowledged there was genuine interest from other clubs during the summer transfer window. He confirmed Liverpool chose not to make him an offer at that point, a decision he found difficult to accept. “I received the news the club had made a decision not to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very very sad,” he said. “Everybody can see I give 100% for this club every single day in training.”

Mac Allister was careful to frame his disappointment without bitterness toward his teammates. Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch — both of whom play in the same midfield positions — have recently signed new deals, and the World Cup winner said he was genuinely pleased for them while acknowledging the personal sting. “I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me happy as they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me sad as I didn’t get mine. But there is still time.”

The situation raises broader questions about Liverpool’s midfield planning. With Florian Wirtz operating as the team’s number ten, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, and Gravenberch are effectively competing for two starting berths. The club opted against signing an additional midfielder during the summer window, a decision that has drawn criticism from some pundits who believe the squad lacks a natural defensive midfielder.

Mac Allister stopped short of issuing any kind of ultimatum, insisting his commitment to the club remains total regardless of his contractual uncertainty. “We won the Premier League together and went through difficult times together and I will always give my best,” he said. “We will see what happens but of course it makes me sad.”
