Luis Enrique and Déhu reunite, teammates at Barcelona in 1999-2000
Before the Trophée des champions between Lens and PSG, Luis Enrique and Frédéric Déhu crossed paths to recall their shared season at FC Barcelona in 1999-2000 under Louis van Gaal.
Before the kick-off of the Trophée des champions between Racing Club de Lens and Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Enrique and Frédéric Déhu exchanged a few words, reviving memories of a season spent together at FC Barcelona more than twenty-five years ago.
“We simply wanted to catch up with each other. Even though we weren’t friends off the pitch, we spent a year together. It was just to exchange a few words,” the former French central defender confided.
The two men indeed played together during the 1999-2000 season. Déhu had just arrived from Lens, while Luis Enrique was already a key figure in the Catalan dressing room. But the Frenchman’s season proved mixed: a starter at the beginning of the campaign, he quickly lost his place to competition from Abelardo and Frank de Boer, before injuries further complicated his integration. Louis van Gaal had little use for him by the end of the season.
Despite a disappointing domestic record — no title won that year — Barcelona reached the semi-finals of the Ligue des Champions. Déhu contributed to this European campaign by scoring a memorable goal against Hertha Berlin.
Five caps for the French national team, one season in Catalonia and a striking European memory: Frédéric Déhu’s spell at Barcelona remains a brief but brilliant chapter in a career built largely in the red and gold colours of Lens.
