Lowe breaks Leinster try-scoring record on his 100th appearance against Lions
James Lowe scored twice in the second half to become Leinster's all-time leading try-scorer with 71, as the province demolished Lions 59-10 in Dublin to advance to the United Rugby Championship semi-finals.
James Lowe became Leinster’s all-time record try-scorer on Saturday, touching down twice in a commanding 59-10 quarter-final victory over Lions in Dublin to book his side’s place in the United Rugby Championship semi-finals. The Ireland wing’s double took his provincial tally to 71 tries, surpassing the previous record on the occasion of his 100th appearance for Leinster.
Leinster had already established firm control before the break, with tries from Dan Sheehan, Hugo Keenan and James Ryan giving them a 21-5 lead at half-time. Lowe’s two second-half scores were part of a broader surge that saw Scott Penny, Gus McCarthy and Jimmy O’Brien also cross the whiteline, with Sam Prendergast converting seven of the side’s nine tries and adding one of his own. Lions’ only response came through two tries from Henco van Wyk.
For Lowe, the milestone carried personal significance, though he was quick to frame it within the team’s wider ambitions. “It’s something I didn’t think about when I first came to Ireland,” he said after the final whistle. “The personal stuff is class, but trophies are what you want at the end of the season.”
The result sets up a semi-final meeting with the Stormers, another South African side, as Leinster continue their pursuit of silverware. Prendergast’s performance in particular will draw attention, the young out-half combining an assured kicking display with an important try of his own as Leinster’s depth and cohesion proved far too much for Lions to handle across 80 minutes.
