Loughman's concussion forces Ireland change with Bohan set for Japan debut
Jeremy Loughman has been ruled out of Ireland's Nations Championship clash with Japan in Newcastle on Saturday after suffering a concussion, with Connacht loosehead Billy Bohan in line for a first Test cap from the bench.
Jeremy Loughman has been ruled out of Ireland’s Nations Championship fixture against Japan at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on Saturday, after the loosehead prop was stood down with a concussion sustained during last weekend’s 33-31 victory over Australia in Sydney.
The enforced absence leaves Andy Farrell’s management working through their front-row options, with Connacht’s Billy Bohan the likely beneficiary. The uncapped loosehead is in line to make his Test debut from the replacements bench — a significant moment for a player who has waited patiently for his international opportunity.
An IRFU statement confirmed: “Jeremy Loughman (concussion) is stood down this week,” with the squad having stepped up preparations ahead of the second round of the Nations Championship.
There is a second injury concern to monitor. Ulster winger Rob Baloucoune, who missed the win over Australia with a hamstring problem, remains a doubt, with the IRFU stating that “a decision on Rob Baloucoune (hamstring) will be made later in the week.” Farrell will be eager to have him available given his influential form during the Six Nations. Beyond those two cases, the squad has emerged from the physical Sydney contest without further injury concerns.
Ireland arrive in Newcastle looking to make it two wins from two in the Nations Championship, having opened their campaign with a 27-10 victory over Italy. Japan, meanwhile, represent a different kind of test — a side capable of causing disruption at set-piece and in the wider channels.
The Ireland team to face Japan will be announced at 8am Thursday, Australian time.
