Lopes inspires Shamrock Rovers' historic comeback to reach Champions League second round
Roberto 'Pico' Lopes returned from Cape Verde's World Cup campaign to captain Shamrock Rovers to a 5-1 second-leg win over Floriana, overturning a 2-0 deficit — a first in League of Ireland European history.
Roberto ‘Pico’ Lopes capped a remarkable summer by inspiring Shamrock Rovers to a historic Champions League qualifying comeback at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday, just weeks after starring for Cape Verde at the World Cup.
Rovers had lost the first leg 2-0 to Maltese side Floriana — a result that left them needing to achieve something no League of Ireland club had ever managed: overturning a two-goal first-leg deficit in European competition. With Lopes unavailable for that opening tie, the 34-year-old captain returned to the starting XI for the second leg and his side delivered emphatically, winning 5-1 to advance on aggregate.
The victory sends Rovers into the second qualifying round on the champions path, where they will face Armenian side Ararat — keeping alive the prospect of reaching the Champions League group stage proper.
Lopes’s journey to this moment is one of the more unlikely stories in modern football. Born and raised in Dublin, he was contacted via LinkedIn and invited to represent Cape Verde for the first time eight years ago. That decision led him, eventually, to the 2026 World Cup, where the Blue Sharks produced a series of performances that captured global attention.
Cape Verde drew 0-0 with Spain in their opening group game — a result that earned goalkeeper Vozinha widespread praise, with Lopes providing the defensive foundation behind him. They then pushed reigning champions Argentina to extra time in the round of 32, losing 3-2 in one of the tournament’s standout matches. For Lopes, it meant lining up directly against eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi on the sport’s biggest stage.
His return to club duties has been seamless. Rovers, who won the League of Ireland Premier Division in 2025 and currently lead the 2026 season by seven points from Bohemians, earned their Champions League qualifying place through that title triumph. According to RTE Sport’s report on Tuesday’s second leg, Rovers “hounded Floriana from start to finish” with their captain back in the side.
Elsewhere in the first qualifying round, Welsh side The New Saints were eliminated by Azerbaijani club Sabah, while Northern Ireland’s Larne progressed past San Marino’s Tre Fiori over two legs.
