France was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup by Spain (1-2) in the semi-final on Tuesday evening, and the behind-the-scenes details of the defeat are as revealing as the score. According to L’Équipe, half-time was marked by a tense intervention from Ousmane Dembélé that left its mark in the dressing room.

Trailing 0-1 after a first half dominated by La Roja, the France players listened to the Paris Saint-Germain forward point out the lack of coordination in their pressing. But the intervention had the opposite effect from what was intended: several teammates were annoyed, having “the impression that Dembélé was getting angry when he himself was struggling and not in other circumstances,” reports the sports daily.

The uprising Dembélé hoped for did not materialize. After returning from the dressing room, the same tactical shortcomings persisted, and Spain doubled their lead in the 60th minute to seal France’s elimination.

After the final whistle, Kylian Mbappé analyzed the defeat with clarity. “We didn’t play the match we wanted to play, whether tactically or technically, in the overall level we delivered,” the France captain lamented. “Our objective was to press them high to prevent them from establishing this false rhythm because, in controlling the game, they are better than us. We didn’t manage to do that. There were too many technical approximations and we failed to hurt them when we needed to hurt them.”

France, which said it was “on a mission” to claim a third star, leaves the 2026 World Cup without having found the keys to counter Spain’s mastery — neither on the pitch nor in the dressing room.
