Lizarazu tempers enthusiasm around OM despite four consecutive wins
After climbing from seventeenth to sixth place in Ligue 1 thanks to four straight victories, OM is generating optimism. Bixente Lizarazu, however, urges caution, highlighting the modest quality of the opponents defeated.
Olympique de Marseille has turned things around in Ligue 1, rising from seventeenth to sixth place thanks to four consecutive victories. But for Bixente Lizarazu, it is too early to celebrate.
Questioned Sunday on the Téléfoot program, the 1998 World Cup winner chose nuance. “We’re not going to get carried away, like Genesio. I think his message is perfect. The start of the season was very difficult,” he said. The former defender recalled the context in which Bruno Genesio took over: late recruitment, a poor start and a coach who, according to him, “nearly resigned.”
Lizarazu acknowledges the value of the current run — victories against Troyes, Angers, Le Havre and Toulouse — but puts the significance of these results into perspective. These opponents are not “the biggest teams in the French championship,” he clarified, before adding that these points remain nonetheless “important” and bring “more peace of mind” to the club.
Genesio’s work is generally praised: the manager is credited with finding collective balance and allowing OM to “work more calmly.” But caution remains necessary before more demanding challenges.
Marseille travels Sunday evening to Bollaert-Delelis to face Lens, who were heavily beaten 9-1 by Como in the Ligue des Champions midweek. After the international break, Marseille will host Le Mans on November 22.
