Manchester City were found guilty on Friday of 114 of the 115 Premier League financial charges brought against them in 2023, and Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has since claimed he has been given advance knowledge of what their punishment will be.

Posting on X on Sunday, the Manchester City supporter wrote that someone in a “very very high position” had told him the club would receive only a fine and a transfer ban if they lose their expected appeal against the verdict. “Just been told by someone in a very very high position if we lose our appeal which we won’t we’ll be getting a FINE and TRANSFER BAN and that’s it,” Gallagher wrote.

The claim runs counter to the more severe sanctions being widely discussed in the wake of the independent panel’s ruling. Pundits and rival clubs have speculated that City could face significant points deductions, potential relegation from the Premier League, or even the stripping of titles won between 2009 and 2018 — the period during which the alleged financial misconduct is said to have taken place.

City are expected to lodge a formal appeal against Friday’s verdict, having maintained their innocence throughout a process that has taken three years to reach this stage. That appeal means any final sanctions remain some way off, leaving the football world in a prolonged period of uncertainty.

Gallagher’s brother and fellow Oasis member Noel also reacted to the verdict, expressing surprise given the club’s repeated denials. “All along the club reassured us and vehemently denied all the charges. It was a shock to hear we were guilty on all but one of them,” Noel said. He added that while the verdict may taint the club’s achievements in the eyes of others, he stood by what he witnessed on the pitch. “Whatever goes on in the boardroom, it’s nothing to do with the supporters or the players.”

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak addressed supporters in an open letter on Saturday, thanking them for their backing throughout the saga.
