Leinster are preparing to open contract talks with Sam Prendergast after the Ireland fly-half entered the final year of his deal with the back-to-back United Rugby Championship champions at the start of July. The 23-year-old signed his most recent contract in March 2025, but his value has risen sharply since then.

Prendergast’s name has surfaced in speculation about a potential 2027 departure, yet sources suggest there is little genuine prospect of him leaving Leinster. The province will be chasing a hat-trick of URC titles when they open their campaign against the Lions at Ellis Park, and Prendergast figures centrally in those plans.

One notable detail that drew attention from Leinster supporters is that Prendergast is contracted directly to the province rather than holding a central IRFU contract — an arrangement that raised eyebrows among sections of the fan base when it came to light.

Earlier this year, former Wales fly-half Dan Biggar suggested that a temporary move away from Leinster could benefit Prendergast during a dip in form, pointing to Harry Byrne’s loan spell at Bristol Bears as a model. Prendergast ultimately stayed and responded emphatically, producing a Man of the Match performance in Leinster’s URC Grand Final victory over the Bulls at Croke Park before helping Andy Farrell’s Ireland side beat Australia in Sydney during the Nations Championship.

His summer form puts him in contention to edge ahead of Munster’s Jack Crowley as Farrell’s first-choice fly-half. Crowley missed the Australia tour with a rare blood vessel issue in his leg, leaving Prendergast to consolidate his standing in the Ireland set-up.

Leinster are well stocked at ten, with Harry Byrne providing the primary internal competition and Ciarán Frawley — who started against Japan in the summer — also available to head coach Leo Cullen. Charlie Tector and Austrian Casper Gabriel add further depth to the position.
