Scarlets secure Eddie James on new deal amid WRU West Wales licence battle
Wales centre Eddie James has extended his contract with the Scarlets, with Director of Rugby Nigel Davies describing the retention of the 24-year-old as a significant moment for a club fighting to preserve its WRU West Wales regional licence against the Ospreys.
Eddie James has signed a contract extension with the Scarlets, with Director of Rugby Nigel Davies openly acknowledging the signing carries weight beyond the pitch as the Welsh region battles the Ospreys for the WRU West Wales licence.
James, 24, had a year remaining on his existing deal but has committed his future to Parc y Scarlets, where the Carmarthen-born centre has made 47 appearances and developed into a full Wales international with 11 caps. Standing at 6ft 4in and weighing 104kg, he is regarded as one of the most physically imposing ball-carriers in Welsh rugby.
“Keeping Eddie at Parc y Scarlets is a very significant signing for our club, and we are delighted he will continue his rugby journey with us,” Davies said. “Having players like Eddie at the heart of what we’re building is every bit as important as new players coming into the squad.”
Davies was keen to frame the renewal as a statement of the Scarlets’ player-development identity — a point that takes on added resonance given the club’s uncertain future. “We’re proud of our ethos of developing our own players, and we want to give our young Welsh players an environment in which they know they can achieve their ambitions in a Scarlets jersey,” he added.
The director of rugby also pointed to James’s ceiling as a reason for optimism. “The exciting thing with Eddie is that there is still so much more to come from him. He’s big, powerful and explosive, but he’s also got the skill-set to play the type of rugby we’re building here. His best rugby should still be ahead of him.”
James, who featured for Wales under Steve Tandy during the summer, said the decision to stay was straightforward. “Growing up in the region and supporting the Scarlets as a youngster, the club means a huge amount to me. It’s home to me, so it was an easy decision to extend my contract.”
The centre is set to return to pre-season training next week and is already focused on the URC season opener against Cardiff at Parc y Scarlets. “It’s an exciting season ahead for us. The new signings have added to the talent we already have, and there’s a clear ambition about where we want to go as a group,” he said.
