Leinster overturn half-time deficit to demolish Clermont 48-23 in Champions Cup opener
Leo Cullen's Leinster trailed by one point at the break in Clermont but ran in six tries to claim a commanding 48-23 victory at Stade Marcel-Michelin, earning a full five-point haul in Pool 1 of the Champions Cup.
Leinster overturned a one-point half-time deficit to dismantle Clermont ASM 48-23 at Stade Marcel-Michelin on Saturday, opening their Investec Champions Cup campaign with a five-point haul in Pool 1. Leo Cullen’s side ran in six tries in a performance that, while far from flawless, underlined why last year’s finalists remain among the leading contenders for European honours.
The Irish province made an early statement when Tadhg Furlong powered over after nine minutes, finishing off a superb offload from Fintan Gunne, with Sam Prendergast adding the conversion. Clermont, however, refused to fold. Fly-half Harry Plummer kept the hosts in contention through the boot, and winger Joris Jurand’s try helped Clermont edge into a 16-15 lead at the break despite Leinster enjoying the greater share of territory and possession.
The second half belonged entirely to the visitors. Prendergast and Jimmy O’Brien repeatedly stretched the Clermont defence after the restart, and their combination paid off almost immediately when Prendergast spotted a midfield mismatch, kicked ahead, and O’Brien kept the ball alive before returning it inside for the fly-half to cross. Prendergast converted his own score to put Leinster back in front.
The decisive moment arrived midway through the second half when Clermont prop Nohem Ez Zahouany was yellow-carded for collapsing a dominant Leinster scrum, with Andrew Porter and Furlong leading the pressure. Referee Matthew Carley awarded a penalty try, and hooker Dan Sheehan quickly added his second of the afternoon from a driving maul to put the result beyond doubt.
Clermont replacement Mathys Belaubre offered the home crowd brief hope with a score on 64 minutes, but the response was immediate. From the restart, number eight Jack Conan burst through two defenders to restore Leinster’s momentum, and Prendergast’s conversion stretched the lead further. Tommy O’Brien crossed late on to complete the rout and seal a commanding opening-weekend statement from the URC champions.
