Leicester hooker Finn Theobald-Thomas forced to retire at 23 on medical grounds
Leicester Tigers have confirmed that hooker Finn Theobald-Thomas, 23, has been forced to retire from rugby on medical grounds, deepening a hooker crisis at the club with Jamie Blamire and Charlie Clare also currently sidelined through injury.
Leicester Tigers hooker Finn Theobald-Thomas has been forced to retire from rugby with immediate effect on medical grounds, the club confirmed this week. The 23-year-old made 33 appearances for Tigers after joining ahead of the 2023-24 season, having previously played for Worcester and Gloucester.
Theobald-Thomas’s final appearance came seven months ago, when he came off the bench for Jamie Blamire in the Slater Cup tie against Gloucester at Villa Park — a game Leicester won with a bonus point. He is being supported through his transition by both the club and the Rugby Players’ Association, having progressed through England’s age-group system before his career was cut short.
Tigers head coach Geoff Parling paid tribute to the retiring hooker. “I’m gutted with this news of Finn’s retirement from rugby, both from a team point of view and for him personally to have such a promising rugby journey cut short,” Parling said. “He is a loveable bloke who is exactly the type of character you’d want to be around, unselfish and fully invested in the team. We’ll miss him and he knows that he’ll always be part of this team.”
The news arrives at a difficult time for Leicester’s hooker stocks. Both Blamire and Charlie Clare, the club’s two first-choice hookers last season, are currently sidelined through injury. Blamire picked up a leg knock against Saracens on the opening day of the Gallagher Premiership season, while Clare is believed to be facing a longer-term absence after going off holding his shoulder in last month’s PREM Cup fixture against Harlequins.
New signings Samiuela Moli and Corbin Thunder — the latter on a short-term loan from National 1 club Sale FC — filled in at hooker during last week’s win at Newcastle Red Bulls. Beyond that pair, however, Leicester’s options in the position are thin, and the club will be eager to recover fit bodies as quickly as possible.
