Left-back tops United's deadline-day wishlist as window nears close

Manchester United face a race against the 11pm deadline to address their most glaring positional gap, with a left-back identified as the club’s primary remaining target on the final day of the summer transfer window.

United’s summer business has been heavily focused on midfield. The departures of Casemiro and others left a significant hole in the centre of the park, and the club moved to fill it with three signings: Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea, Youri Tielemans joined from Aston Villa, and Carlos Baleba completed the trio last week. Baleba was introduced to supporters on Sunday to a warm reception.

Outside of midfield, activity has been more limited. Karl Darlow was brought in to shore up the goalkeeping department following the exits of Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir, and Radek Vitek. Winger Tynan Thompson also arrived from Tottenham, adding further depth to the attacking options.

The left-back position remains the most pressing concern heading into the final hours. United had also explored the possibility of signing a left-sided winger earlier in the window, but that pursuit appears to have cooled following signs that Marcus Rashford will remain at Old Trafford. His inclusion in the starting lineup against Ipswich Town is seen as an indication that his future lies at the club.

Joshua Zirkzee’s situation adds another layer of uncertainty. The Dutch forward has been linked with several Italian clubs throughout the summer and was an unused substitute in the Ipswich fixture, raising questions about his long-term role under the current setup.

With the window closing at 11pm, United may still move to exploit any late opportunities that emerge in the market, either to secure their left-back target or to further strengthen the attacking department.
